Fighting Fear in a Fear Driven World

There’s so much uncertainty in the world right now, and uncertainty often breeds fear. My heart has been breaking over the many people dealing with fear, because I’ve lived in it’s prison. Fear is tormenting, and can even be debilitating. With God’s help, I’ve also overcome fear, so I know freedom is possible – Yes, even in the midst of a world that seems out of control. This is God’s promise to us:

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

John 16:33

Satan uses fear to keep us away from the peace God promises us. You may wonder how you can have peace in the midst of all that’s going on in the world right now, but the peace God promises, is a peace that surpasses our natural understanding. His peace is not based on external things. Yes, peace in the midst of the storm is possible.

It can be a real fight to become free of fear and walk in God’s peace, especially when so many around us are afraid. But God has given us the power to overcome fear, and our greatest weapon is the Word. The TRUTH of God’s Word will destroy FEAR.

  1. The Battle is in the Mind

For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ,

2 Corinthians 10:3-5 (ESV)

This verse is so powerful because it teaches us how to fight. It tells us to take those fearful thoughts captive – don’t let them roam around freely in your mind. Then, replace those fearful thoughts with the truth of God’s Word. You may have to do this all throughout your day, but soon, you’ll find that the fearful thoughts become less and less.

2. Guard Your Heart

Above all else, guard your heart,
    for everything you do flows from it.

Proverbs 4:23

Garbage in, garbage out. What we fill ourselves with, will be reproduced in our lives. The Bible says, “As a man thinks in his heart, so is he ( Proverbs 23:7). It’s our job to protect our hearts. If you feel the need to check the news daily, just check the headlines, and only look long enough to get updated, not to fill yourself with every negative statistic, what-if scenario, worst case horror story or panic driven report. This goes for social media too. Maybe it’s time to unfollow a few “friends” for a while. Surround yourself with people that will feed your faith not your fear

3. Meditate on good things

 Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.  The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you.

Philippians 4:8-9

Whether we realize it or not, we’re meditating on things all day long. What we meditate on can produce good things or bad things. Choosing to meditate on God’s Word, will always produce good things in our life:

My son, pay attention to what I say;
    turn your ear to my words.
2Do not let them out of your sight,
    keep them within your heart;
for they are life to those who find them
    and health to one’s whole body

Proverbs 4:20-23

4. Pray

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:6-7

It’s easy to feel helpless when things seem out of control. Honestly, we’re never really in control. God, however, is always in control. We can depend on the One who is always good, forever faithful and loves us with an everlasting love. Not only does prayer bring us peace, it’s powerful and accomplishes much (James 5:16). Prayer is so important.

5. Keep Your Mind Focused on God

You will keep him in perfect peace,
Whose mind is stayed on You,
Because he trusts in You.

Isaiah 26:3

When fear threatens me, I begin to think on the goodness of God. 1 John 4:18 says that God’s “perfect love casts out all fear.” Spend time with God in His Word and get to know Him more. Meditate on His wonderful love for you. When you know God’s love, it will produce an enduring strength and peace in your life. Fear may come knocking on the door of your heart, but God’s love will push it out.

Here are some things about God to meditate on:

I encourage you to keep filling yourself with the Word. Things are changing every day right now, but God’s Word NEVER changes! Keep meditating on the Truth. Speak it out loud. Fear can’t stand against the Truth of God’s Word. Please share this post with others, so they can fight against fear too. Sending love and prayers to you all!
